Meet the Expert

Dr Valery Combes

Dr Valery Combes
Associate Professor Associate Head of School (Education & Students) Microvesicles and Malaria Research Group Head

Valery obtained her PhD in 2001 from the Universite de la Mediterranee (Marseille, France) on the role of endothelial microparticles in the pathogenesis of thrombotic diseases. She is a vascular biologist with 25+ years of experience and leadership in the field of extracellular vesicle (EV) biology, is currently leading the Microvesicles and Malaria Research Group and is Associate Head of School Education & Students in the School of Life Sciences.

Valery demonstrated the role of extracellular vesicles in cell-cell communication and also used experimental cerebral malaria to demonstrate the role of extracellular vesicles in the pathogenesis of this disease and to explore the role of their cargo (proteins and microRNA). Her work has led to highly cited seminal papers demonstrating the function and critical involvement of EVs in malaria using studies in patients, in vitro as well as animal models. She's published 89 manuscripts, has a h-index of 41 and 5771 citations (Scopus 01/24).

More Less

Biology is an integral part of several of our undergraduate degrees at UTS. This bridging course will ensure you are equipped with the assumed knowledge necessary to tackle first-year subjects in Science, Biology, and a host of other degrees across multiple faculties.

About this course

The Biology Bridging course is a 2 week intensive learning experience designed to introduce students to the concepts of biology at a level taught in secondary schools. This would suit recent school leavers without a biology background or returning students who would like a refresher in these concepts before commencing their university studies.

Students will be introduced to the study of the structure, function and biochemistry of cells, and the tools that scientists use in this field. They will explore the biocomplexity and biodiversity of living things as well as investigate genes and how they are inherited.

A general understanding of these concepts is assumed knowledge for most first-year biology-based subjects, and this is an ideal way to get up to speed before starting your degree.

Key benefits of this course

This bridging course has been designed to:

  • Introduce biology concepts
  • Reinforce existing knowledge
  • Prepare you to undertake cell and human biology subjects in first year university.

Digital badge and certificate

A digital badge and certificate will be awarded following the successful completion of any necessary tasks or assessments to demonstrate acquired learning of the short course or for meeting attendance and/or participation requirements.
