Lead Academic

Dr Mehran Kianinia

Dr Mehran Kianinia
Chancellor's Research Fellow

Mehran is currently a Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UTS, following his research in quantum optics and quantum technologies. He received his BSc (2007) and MSc (2010) in Materials and Science engineering. He then finished his PhD in physics from UTS in 2018 with focus on nanofabrication and quantum optics.

Previously he held postdoctoral and research position with quantum optic group at UTS and TMOS Centre of Excellence. He conducted unique experiments on quantum emitters in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and developed a new fabrication method for indistinguishable photon from solid state sources, and spintronics with 2D materials. The end goal of his research is developed technologies based on 2D materials for application in quantum computation, quantum communication and quantum sensing.

More Less

This two-week course is designed to assist students who may not meet the knowledge requirements of a course or who are not confident with their preparation for university study. The course will be presented by experienced lecturers in Physics at UTS.

About this course

This course covers fundamental physics concepts such as accelerated motion, application of forces, oscillations, waves and thermal physics, along with essential problem solving and mathematics skills. It is taught at an introductory level, with the aim of assisting participants in narrowing the gap between high school physics and university studies.

The course runs in the afternoon over two successive weeks.

Bridging courses are short, intensive courses designed for high school students entering tertiary study. They are useful for students who are not confident with their preparation for university study, or may not meet the assumed knowledge requirements.

Key benefits of this course

This course has been designed to:

  • Equip you with the skills to tackle HSC level physics prior to starting university
  • Strengthen your ability to tackle problems and topics that will be required for your degree
  • Give you a head start in your studies and allow you to make student connections prior to starting University
  • Refresh and improve your current physics knowledge to gain an edge in your University studies.

Digital badge and certificate

A digital badge and certificate will be awarded following the successful completion of any necessary tasks or assessments to demonstrate acquired learning of the short course or for meeting attendance and/or participation requirements.

Who is this course for?

This course is designed to assist students with any gaps in knowledge and skills during the transition to university study. This may be due (for example) to a limited coverage of physics or science in high school, or a long break away from study. It is expected that students will have completed year 10 high school science or physics, or their equivalents. The course is designed for:

  • School leavers who have completed their year 12 studies, but not the recommended level of physics
  • Returning or mature age students.
