This UTS Open short course developed in conjunction with the Australia Council for the Arts, by creatives for creatives, is designed to equip you and your organisation to not just survive in the digital future, but to thrive.

About this course

Digital technology has become an integral part of our world, affecting and involving almost every aspect of our lives, from creation to exhibition, production to consumption. What does digital actually mean? How are artists integrating new technologies into their work to reach new audiences? How are arts organisations using technology to become more efficient and amplify their work?

This course will equip you with the tools, skills and techniques to meet tomorrow’s challenges in this new digitally-enabled world. You’ll discover how to transform your organisation and workflows digitally and how digital mindsets and approaches can inspire your creative work and inform business practices.

You will also explore key digital concepts, modes of digital practice, emergent technologies, and ideas around digital strategy and business model innovation. You will learn from real-world case studies from some of Australia’s most innovative arts practitioners and organisations, including Lynette Walworth, Shawn Gladwell, Larissa Behrendt, the Sydney Dance Company, Regional Arts Australia and more. Additionally, you will network with industry peers, practitioners and organisations working in different artforms, sectors and regions across Australia in supportive and engaging weekly workshops. Finally, you will discover how to assess your digital readiness, draft a digital transformation strategy, foster diversity, accessibility and diversity, and develop a sustainable digital business model.

Course outline

This online course comprises six modules and is delivered over six weeks. Each module features a combination of engaging online activities, including multimedia learning experiences, interactive quizzes, collaborative discussions, insights from fellow practitioners and UTS academics.

Module 1 – Introducing digital

  • What digital actually means, how artists are employing and integrating digital technology into their work, and how arts organisations are using technology to become more efficient and effectively amplify their work.

Module 2 – Emerging and experimental creative technologies

  • How emerging and experimental technologies are being used in the arts today, how to assess new technologies against your current creative practice and goals, and how to approach experimentation or collaboration.

Module 3 – Audience engagement

  • How to engage with digital audiences and build safe, diverse, accessible and inclusive online communities to optimise audience experiences.

Module 4 – Digital strategy

  • What a digital strategy is, how to conduct a digital readiness audit and how to draft a digital vision to support your artistic and commercial goals.

Module 5 – Digital business models

  • What a digital business model is and why you need one, what online monetisation models mean for your practice, and how to build a sustainable digital business model.

Module 6 – Digital ethics and leadership

  • What digital leadership is, different approaches to digital leadership in the arts, and the core ethical issues around digital, including IP and ICIP.

Course outline

Each module will enable you to fill a digital skills passport, unlocking new opportunities in the digital space for you as a practitioner. At the end of each module, you'll unlock a digital skill card to add to your passport. You will need to complete all of the module material to unlock the digital skill card and access the following module.

Course learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand key digital concepts, such as what digital means for the creative industries
  • Identify emerging and experimental digital and creative technologies
  • Analyse digital practices for the arts, including audience engagement and collaboration
  • Apply digital transformation strategies to your practice
  • Develop and design a digital business model
  • Reflect and evaluate approaches to digital leadership and ethics.

Requirements

To complete this online short course, you will need access to a computer or device with adequate internet access and sufficient software and bandwidth to support web conferencing. You will also require an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas and Zoom.
