MICROCREDENTIAL

Applied Data Visualisation

Enrol now

Designed for professionals with some experience in data visualisation, this microcredential focuses on data driven storytelling. Explore how visualisation techniques and new developments in hardware and software can support narrative data visualisation.

About this microcredential

In this microcredential, participants learn to develop data visualisations that support the creation and presentation of data driven stories.  You will consider approaches to narrative development and how interactive data visualisation techniques can enable users to explore data within the context of a broader narrative arc.

The potential of technologies such as real-time 3D game engines and new audio-visual hardware to support innovative forms of collaborative and immersive visualisations are also explored.

Key benefits of this microcredential

  • A focused primer on the latest approaches in data visualisation – learn to se data visualisation to tell stories and support narrative presentations.
  • Develop your understanding of key techniques and concepts along with hands-on activities and case studies to visualize real data sets and compare approaches.
  • Complete as a self-contained stand-alone program, or combine this with other microcredentials to stack towards future awards study with UTS.

This microcredential aligns with the 2 credit point subject in the Master of Information Technology (C04295).

This microcredential may qualify for recognition of prior learning at this and other institutions.

Who should do this microcredential?

This microcredential is suitable for data visualisation professionals who have some formal or informal experience or training in data visualisation, equivalent to the learning outcomes of the Data Visualisation Foundations and Advanced Data Visualisation microcredentials.

UTS microcredentials are developed for professionals with a capacity to undertake postgraduate tertiary education.

Additional course information

Course outline

In this microcredential, you will meet and work with a dedicated course facilitator who will support your learning and engagement with teaching resources designed by the lead academic and team of experts from the Faculty of Engineering and IT.

This microcredential is structured into four modules. Each module comprises self-study materials and facilitated online sessions. The modules and key topics covered are:

Module 1

  • Spatial and temporal data visualisation

Module 2

  • Text visualisation

Module 3

  • Interactive, narrative-driven data visualisations

Module 4

  • Storytelling with data.

This course is delivered in a scheduled format over ten weeks.

Each week (during weeks one to eight) you will participate in an online session where you will have the chance to apply what you've learned, ask questions and hear from other participants who are taking the course with you. The workshops are led by the course facilitator.

Weeks nine and ten are planned to give you time to complete the final assignment, with support and scheduled Q&A sessions provided.

Course delivery

This microcredential includes weekly live one-hour online tutorials and one-hour weekly Q&A sessions facilitated by an expert UTS academic supporting self-study and online learning activities.

Case studies of real-world applications illustrate applications of key tools and techniques. The workshop sessions focus on hands-on activities and examples. Regular formative quizzes throughout the microcredential will allow participants to gauge their progress.

Tutorials will be scheduled for one-hour sessions every Wednesday evening, and live Q&A sessions every Friday evening.

Final dates and times for live sessions will be confirmed with registered participants prior to the course starting.

Note: recordings of all live sessions will be made available for reference.

Course learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this microcredential, participants will be able to design and create data visualisations that facilitate the discovery and presentation of data-driven stories.

Assessment

The graded assessment task is an individually written assessment to create an interactive data visualisation that enables users to discover and communicate data-driven stories.

Given a dataset containing a range of data types, participants are required to create an interactive data visualisation that supports the discovery and communication of narratives that put the data in context and explain how it has changed.  Participants will select and customise a range of interactive data visualisation techniques to enable this.

Length: 2,000 words

Requirements

Mandatory

  • Course participants are expected to demonstrate some formal or informal experience or training in data visualisation, equivalent to the learning outcomes of the Data Visualisation Foundations and Advanced Data Visualisation microcredentials.
