Houdini Bootcamp

This two-day short course will help you develop a practical understanding of the capabilities and applications of Houdini in film, animation, VFX and data visualisation projects.

About this course

Houdini-Training-Center-black-300x463.jpgThis course will allow you to get hands-on with Houdini, helping you to develop your skills and build a foundation for independent use and further learning. It will provide an advanced overview of the effects software, Houdini, which is used extensively in the film, visual effects and animation sectors, and increasingly, for data visualisation and simulation.

The course will focus on the features of the package and how users can apply those functions to specific project examples. Participants will be empowered to develop a deeper understanding of the software and to ‘think Houdini’, in order to self-explore and problem-solve.

The UTS Animal Logic Academy is an approved Houdini Training Centre.

Course structure

During this two-day short course, our experts and trainers will share presentations and case studies, along with hands-on practical exercises. Participants will be able to operate a UTS Animal Logic Academy (ALA) workstation with Houdini installed and will have the opportunity to work through tasks and examples whilst receiving feedback and input from the training team.

The following key topics will be covered during the short course:

  • Introduction recap
  • Advanced vex, creating geometry and vex that interacts with other systems
  • Houdini digital assets (HDAs) - creating your own plugins and nodes
  • Sop solvers vs dops, pros and cons
  • Volumes, treating as geometry
  • Tops and procedural dependency graphs (PDGs) and having Houdini control bigger systems
  • “Thinking Houdini” and how to effectively approach problems
  • Houdini and interaction with other 3D apps
  • Python, where it sits in relation to the rest of Houdini and pros and cons
  • Compositing operators (COPs), the under loved compositing engine with surprisingly wide uses
  • Online resources, how to find answers and finding other Houdini users.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, participants will have a solid understanding of the capabilities and application of the effects software, Houdini, across multiple creative and commercial contexts. Participants will also have the ability to independently solve problems and manage further self-study in Houdini.

Participants must have some knowledge and experience with FX and 3D computer graphics software and workflows. Some basic knowledge of Houdini is advantageous, either from prior study or experience, or completion of the one-day UTS ALA Masterclass, Introduction to Houdini.
