Plan reading

This one-day course is designed to provide participants with training in reading and interpreting the various types of plans used in planning departments in local government.

About this course

The course is a hands-on introduction to plan reading. It covers a variety of plans including floor plans, sectional plans, overshadowing diagrams, hydraulic plans and electrical plans. It also covers specialised plans such as engineering details and bushfire plans. The course draws on a variety of teaching methods and practical workshops to give students the skills to understand the different kinds of plans.

Course structure

This workshop will allow learners  to develop their skills through practical examples and the day is split into four different modules.

Topics covered include:

  • The importance of plan reading and using correct terminology
  • Using and interpreting plan scales
  • Understanding contours
  • Interpreting site plans, floor plans, elevations plans and section plans
  • Understanding easements and “restriction on the use of land”
  • Subdivision plans and 88b instruments
  • Interpreting overshadowing diagrams
  • Reading specialised plans such as engineering details and bushfire plans 


Learning outcomes

At the end of the training session, the student should be confident reading and interpreting a variety of plans relevant to local government.

Stephen provides a variety of engaging training courses to assist both local government organisations and accredited certifiers across NSW.

Craig Squires
Environmental Health and Building Surveyor

Craig Squires is an Accredited Certifier with over twenty years experience in local government certification. As well as teaching short courses at UTS for almost 10 years, he has taught at TAFE and has lectured in undergraduate and postgraduate courses at Western Sydney University. Craig is the coordinator of the Certification and Fire Safety team at Penrith City Council.
