With an ageing population, lawyers across many areas of practice can expect to encounter people with dementia. This short course busts the myths and misperceptions by providing an understanding about dementia. and equips lawyers with up-to-date knowledge and resources to work more effectively with clients diagnosed with, or at risk of, dementia.

 

About this course

This online, self-paced short course provides dementia-specific training for lawyers, with a focus on core knowledge and principles to guide effective and ethical professional practice. The course is based on the concept of a ‘dementia-capable’ legal practitioner, who encompasses attributes across four areas:

        1. Knowledge          2. Professionalism          3. Legal rights and risk          4. Capacity.

Course outline

Participants will access this course via UTS’ user-friendly online learning management system (LMS), Canvas. The course content is presented in engaging and interactive ways throughout the course. The following aspects are included in the course content:

  • Self-assessment questionnaires to reflect on your current knowledge and attitudes, and quizzes, which provide immediate feedback on your learning
  • Compilation of your own ‘dementia-capable toolkit’ by downloading tools and checklists presented within the course and also through searching for local resources, such as referral pathways
  • Interactive features offer engaging summaries of current research, where you will be invited to share experiences with peers through discussion posts
  • Audio and video clips which will provide insights on course topics from medical and legal practitioners and dementia advocates.

This self-paced course is designed to take participants approximately 2 hours to complete, however, you may choose to spend more time exploring suggested readings and resources in compiling your ‘dementia-capable toolkit’.    

Course learning objectives

This short course will enable participants to:

  • Identify the attributes of dementia-capable legal practitioners
  • Evaluate and reflect on their skills as a dementia-capable legal practitioner
  • Choose and use respectful language as a dementia-capable practitioner
  • Explain the 10 principles of dignity in care for people with dementia and their relevance to legal practice
  • Describe the common types of dementia and identify the risk factors for dementia
  • Recognise the needs of diverse populations with dementia and locate appropriate resources to support their needs (e.g. people with younger onset dementia, Indigenous people with dementia).

Participants will need:

  • Access to a computer or device with a reliable internet connection
  • Operating system and a web browser compatible with Canvas
  • Speakers or headphones for audio.
