Why choose the UTS Migration Capstone Assessment Preparation Program?
UTS is an approved provider of the Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice. Only approved providers are given feedback from the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA) on the performance of their graduates after each intake of the Capstone Assessment. UTS is able to continually implement this feedback to enhance our educational offerings and contribute to improved outcomes for our learners.

Course outline
This course is conducted over an 8-week period, with 6 weeks of online classes and self-managed study, followed by a 2-week assessment period. The facilitated online sessions will be conducted via Zoom with meeting links and course materials provided via Canvas.
Weeks 1-6:
- Each week, you’ll participate in two evening classes interacting with the program convenor, Dr Fadi Kotob, and your fellow participants, completing initial work on group tasks (see Participation tasks) and discussing Capstone assessment strategies
- The collaborative work (in groups of 2-3) involves preparing reference resources for use in the Capstone assessment. Each group will present their resource to the rest of the class during one of the regular evening Zoom sessions
- During Weeks 2-4, short-answer practice questions (see Participation tasks) will be set during class for your individual completion by the next class. Your individual submissions will be distributed amongst the cohort for peer review to be completed prior to the next class when the answers will be discussed
- Individual written submissions (Letter of Advice) for the practice case study will be completed during Week 5 (see Assessment: Marked tasks)
- You’ll also work through additional self-paced tasks and independent study over this period, including multiple choice questions with automated answers.
Weeks 7-8:
- Individual one-hour discussion assessments with a supervising RMA will be scheduled at a variety of times during this two-week period (see Assessment: Marked tasks).
Do I have to attend all the Zoom sessions live?
The online classes are a key component of the course and require active participation, so be sure to note the dates and times provided before enrolling in the course (see ‘Book a session’). Zoom sessions will be recorded and made available to enrolled learners for personal review purposes only, not as a substitute for live attendance.
Assessment
Marked tasks
Individual tasks practising components of the Capstone Assessment:
- Written Letter of Advice responding to a provided case study (time constraint of 90 minutes) – Week 5

The pass mark for these tasks is 65%, replicating the grading schema of the Capstone Assessment itself.
Participation tasks
Group tasks:
- Prepare resources which can be used in the capstone exam to quickly locate relevant information about the visa subclasses tested in in the Capstone; as a group, present your prepared resources to the class
- Participate in mock client consultations with provided scenarios: one each as Client, Advisor and Observer (providing feedback).
Individual tasks:
- Write responses to short-answer practice questions
- Peer review the written responses of fellow participants
- Multiple-choice assessment questions (with automated marking) to test knowledge and practise locating answers within an allocated time.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is this short course an alternative to completing a Graduate Diploma in Migration Law and Practice?
A: No. Learners in this course must be finished (or close to completing) their Graduate Diploma studies before taking the UTS MCAPP as part of their preparations for the Capstone Assessment. This level of pre-existing knowledge is assumed of all enrolled participants.
Q: Do I have to participate in Zoom sessions and group work?
A: Yes. This course is designed for learners keen to make the most of the opportunity to actively enhance their communication skills and make professional connections with other future RMAs. Small cohorts (maximum 30 per offering) are intended to allow for discourse and connection amongst the group. The Program Convenor will take note of learners’ Zoom attendance and completion of course activities, reaching out where necessary to offer support and encourage individuals to engage fully to obtain maximum benefit from the MCAPP experience.
Q: I have attempted the Capstone assessment but did not pass one component (i.e. written or oral) – is this course suitable for me as I prepare for my next attempt?
A: Yes. This course is for anyone preparing for either component of the Migration Capstone Assessment. MCAPP learners are expected to engage with all aspects of the course, both written and oral, for the mutual benefit of the cohort and to continue growing their competence as a future member of the profession.
Q: Which assessments do I have to pass to complete this UTS Open short course?
A: Learners are required to score at least 65% in the two marked assessment tasks to be eligible to receive a UTS Open short course certificate and digital badge.
