Course outline
Recent changes to building regulations have touched a new and bigger pool of building professionals. This is primarily caused by the shift to integrated assessment of development proposals. You will learn theory and practice in building assessment through workshop sessions and case studies.
Session 1 - Introduction
- New South Wales Building Regulations, including interaction of the Act, the regulations, the Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standards
- Format of BCA Volume 2
- Classification of buildings.
Session 2 - Building Code of Australia (BCA)
- Section 1 – General Provisions
- Section 2 – Performance Provisions
- Section 3 – Acceptable Constructions; Introduction to Section 3 of Housing Provisions & in-depth assessment of Fire Separation (Part 3. 7 .1).
Session 3 - BCA (continued)
- Sections 2 & 3 – recap of the Housing Provisions and discussion of any problems encountered since the previous workshop period
- Section 3 – Acceptable Constructions: an in-depth assessment.
Session 4 - BCA (continued) and Environmental Planning and Assessment Act
- Section 3: Acceptable Construction
- Relevant provisions of the Act and Regulation
- Course summary and review of any key issues.
Session 5 - BCA (continued) and Swimming Pools Act
- Energy efficiency and sustainability
- Swimming pools.

This course will be delivered as an interactive workshop consisting of an instructor-led lecture, group and individual activities. This training approach allows participants to work through concepts introduced by the trainer in an application-focused teaching environment. Participants will challenge their understanding of the concepts and consider their application once back in their individual workplace.
