Additional course information

Course outline

This online professional development course is designed to enhance your clinical skills in managing the anxiety of those who stutter through in-depth insight into stuttering and social anxiety. The course includes three integrated components: a self-directed learning module, a simulated online treatment experience and a live clinical mentoring session. Each element is designed to build knowledge and confidence in delivering evidence-based support  for those who stutter and who are anxious.

Self-Directed Online Learning Component
This component serves as the theoretical foundation of the course. It is designed to be engaging and interactive, guiding you through a structured module that presents content in a progressive, decision-based format. You will navigate through a series of unfolding multiple-choice questions where every answer, whether correct or incorrect, is followed by a detailed narrative explanation.

This approach ensures that you not only receive feedback but also gain deeper insight into the clinical reasoning behind key concepts.

Core principles of stuttering treatment covered in the module include:

  • The role of anxiety in stuttering
  • Evidence-based therapeutic approaches
  • Clinical considerations in assessment and intervention
  • Effective communication strategies for supporting clients.

You can work through the module at your own pace, ensuring flexibility and time to reflect on the material.

iGlebe Online Treatment Program
In this component,  you will step into the shoes of a hypothetical client and progress through all seven modules of the iGlebe program - an innovative online treatment platform developed by the Australian Stuttering Research Centre. This experiential learning activity allows you to gain firsthand insight into the client journey, helping to better understand how treatment is experienced from a user’s perspective.

As you complete each module, you’ll observe how theoretical principles are applied in practice. This immersive experience supports clinicians in building empathy and refining their therapeutic techniques.

Clinical Mentoring Component
The final element of the course is a live, interactive 3-hour mentoring session, delivered by video conference. This session provides a valuable opportunity to consolidate learning, ask questions, and discuss real-world clinical scenarios with an experienced clinician. It is designed to:

  • Deepen understanding of theoretical concepts
  • Address clinical challenges encountered in practice
  • Encourage reflective discussion and peer learning.

You will be able to raise questions or topics for discussion, ensuring a highly relevant and tailored learning experience.

Course Completion
Upon completion of all three components, you will have developed a well-rounded understanding of how to support clients who stutter, particularly in managing associated anxiety.

The course is suitable for speech pathologists and allied health professionals looking to enhance their knowledge and skills in fluency disorders.

By integrating theory, experiential learning, and clinical mentoring, this course provides a comprehensive, flexible, and practical framework for professional development in stuttering treatment.
