Evidenced by recent floods, flooding cause significant economic damage and even fatalities and injuries. Yet of all natural hazards, flood is the most manageable. This course show how effective land use management reduces the impacts of flooding on the community and the built environment.

About this course

This course teaches participants effective land use management in floodplain risk management (FRM) – a process of informed decision making in the strategic management of flood risk through an appropriate consideration of:

  • FRM issues for future development & Information on the current legislation and policy framework
  • The role of FRM studies and plans in managing risk to future development
  • Practical FRM options for future development and associated duty of care issues
  • Interaction of FRM and emergency management with strategic and development scale land use planning; and
  • Effectively implementing recommendations through land use planning.


This course is supported by Floodplain Management Australia (FMA) and the NSW Government.

Course outline

The following content will be covered during the course:

  • Why flooding in land use planning should be considered
  • Role of management studies and plans
  • Detailed understanding of all the options available and the relevant issues
  • Detailed understanding of continuing risk issues and the options for its management
  • An outline of the information required to assist SES in planning for emergency response
  • An understanding of how LEPs, DCPs and policies can be used to manage flood risk
  • Several case studies to provide practical experience in considering these issues.

This course will be delivered online. Participants will watch online lectures and video before attending 3 x 1.5 hour sessions. During these sessions, a brief recaps of online material is provided leading to detailed Q&A.

Participants will break into small groups to workshop a realistic scenario providing an opportunity to apply what has been taught and are designed to show how detail is applied into practice. These small groups will be facilitated by industry experts. The session will conclude with a reinforcement of key messages and learning.

  • Effective use of land use planning to reduce future flood risk

It will benefit engineers, emergency managers and land use planners who are engaged in, or seeking to enter, the floodplain risk management industry in Australia and wanting to learn more about developing and implementing management plans considering best practice.
