Course outline

This course is structured into four modules. Each module includes self-study materials and facilitated live sessions. The following content will be covered during the course:

  • Module 1 – Overview of Reverse Engineering Processes
    Understanding of how data is analysed, collected, processed, and manipulated for various end uses.
  • Module 2 - Feature Selection and Data Collection for Reverse Engineering
    Differentiate between critical and non-critical mechanical features, and collecting appropriate data for digital part reproduction.
  • Module 3 – CAD Construction and Refinement of Parts for Reverse Engineering
    Digitally constructing parts from manually measured data, and preparing CAD files for 3D printing.
  • Module 4 – Evaluation and Validation of Reverse Engineered Models
    Evaluate accuracy of parts and learn techniques for validating parts for modification in reverse engineering.

Participants will work with a dedicated course facilitator who will support learning and engagement online, as well as in-person. Teaching resources have been designed by a lead academic and a team of experts from the Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building.  

This eight-week course includes self-paced online learning as well as on-campus workshops held in weeks 1, 4 and 7.

Course learning objectives

By the completion of this microcredential, you should be able to:

  • Collect critical component data and prepare it for digital manufacturing methods
  • Demonstrate how to set up components for reverse engineering with manual methods
  • Demonstrate working proficiency in the analysis and interpretation of data from 3D scans obtained from physical components.  

Assessment

Participants are required to complete all assessment task components satisfactorily in order to pass the course. The final grade for this course will be based on the task outlined below.

Task: Reverse engineering project

This task aims to assess your ability to collect, evaluate, and utilise 3D CAD data of a product or product component. The independent task is split into three parts which will be completed throughout the course in the following order:

  • Product selection, critical feature identification, and data analysis planning.
  • Data collection and CAD model generation.
  • 3D printing, verification and validation, process reflection.  

Requirements

Mandatory

To complete this course, you will need a personal computer with adequate internet access and an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas.

Closed footwear and long pants are required for the lab workshop.  

Desired

Participants should have a working knowledge of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and ideally have existing access to CAD software of their choice.
