Lauren Perry

Lauren Perry
Responsible Technology Policy Specialist

As UTS Human Technology Institute’s (HTI’s) Responsible Technology Policy Specialist, Lauren manages major projects including the Facial Recognition Technology Model Law Project and develops education and training resources for the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). Areas of expertise include human rights, public policy, AI governance and the impacts of AI on people and communities.

Prior to joining HTI, Lauren worked at the Australian Human Rights Commission in research, project and policy roles across the Human Rights Scrutiny and Disability Rights Team, working on projects related to freedom of religion, disability employment rights and safeguarding the rights of people in all forms of detention.

Lauren was a founding member of the UTS Young Alumni Committee and currently serves on the UTS/UNSW Trustworthy Digital Society Advisory Committee and ACCAN/Vision 2020 Right to Digital Accessibility Working Group.

Sophie Farthing
Responsible Technology Program Lead

Sophie is a public policy expert with extensive experience in the not-for-profit, campaigning and government sectors in Australia and the United Kingdom. As a human rights lawyer, Sophie’s areas of interest and expertise include the accountable and responsible use of new and emerging technologies.

In her previous role as the Senior Policy Adviser to the Australian Human Rights Commissioner, Sophie led the Human Rights and Technology Project at the Australian Human Rights Commission from 2017 to 2021.

About this course

The legal profession has an outsized opportunity and responsibility in this period of massive AI transformation. Lawyers are increasingly being asked to advise clients seeking to use AI lawfully and responsibly, as well as advise people impacted by AI.

At the same time, AI is affecting legal practice itself, with lawyers increasingly relying on an ever-growing range of AI-powered products and services in their practice. This short course, developed by the UTS Human Technology Institute in partnership with LexisNexis, will help you to navigate the challenges and opportunities that AI has generated.

Course outline

This course comprises the following content:

  • Module 1 - outlines what AI is, unpacks the features of various AI models, and considers how different AI models can be best used
  • Module 2 - sets out how the legal profession is interacting with AI, covering how clients are using or being impacted by AI, relevant laws that impact AI use, and provides a skills deep dive on prompt engineering for generative AI
  • Module 3 - summarises the risks and harms posed by AI, and the key factors legal professionals need to consider when developing safe and responsible AI systems
  • Module 4 - sets out the basics of how to responsibly use AI in your legal practice, including by making sure you are compliant with your professional legal and ethical obligations.

  • Key terminology and typologies of AI
  • How AI is used by the legal profession
  • The risks and harms posed by AI
  • Legal and ethical obligations applying to AI
  • Applying values of human-centred AI.

To complete this online course, you will need a personal computer with adequate internet access and sufficient software and bandwidth to support web conferencing. You will also require an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas and Zoom
