Centre for the Advancement of Indigenous Knowledges
The Centre for the Advancement of Indigenous Knowledges (CAIK) is a group of Indigenous and ally scholars teaching and researching in the discipline of Indigenous Studies.
 
CAIKs research supports Indigenous peoples’ rightful place in the nation. At the heart of the Centre’s research is a commitment to supporting community-led research and critical Indigenous scholarship.
 
Through the Centre’s teaching and mentoring, CAIK fosters Indigenous scholars and creates opportunities for allyship and collaboration. The Centre embeds Indigenous content, perspectives, knowledges and methodologies in research and teaching, and brings to the fore Indigenous agency, cultural resilience and survival. CAIK also builds the capacity of non-Indigenous staff and students to work collaboratively with Indigenous researchers and communities.
 
CAIKs work is underscored by an ethics of care, and ambitions for Indigenous self-determination and land justice, as we work for a reconciled nation.

Course outline

This microcredential is divided into four modules, delivered over six weeks. Participants will be guided by a set of structured, self-paced, interactive activities supported with content, complemented by independent reading and participation in optional online discussion.

Module 1: Designing Indigenous Curriculum – Theoretical Approaches

  • Examine key concepts and theoretical approaches to Indigenising curriculum
  • Explore the history of the relationship between Indigenous Studies and the Academy
  • Understand Indigenous perspectives on Indigenising curriculum.

Module 2: Designing Indigenous Curriculum – Institutional, Disciplinary and Professional Contexts

  • Understand the institutional and disciplinary supports and constraints on developing Indigenised curriculum
  • Develop your awareness of the cultural capability / competency frameworks in place in the higher education sector and professional bodies.

Module 3: Developing Indigenised Curriculum

  • Understand the importance of reflexivity in designing and delivering Indigenous content
  • Identify and evaluate discipline-specific Indigenous research, readings and resources emphasising Indigenous(-led) scholarship
  • Learn how to design discipline-relevant Indigenous curriculum in tertiary education contexts.

Module 4: Implementing Indigenous Curriculum

  • Understand best practice in delivering Indigenising curriculum and reflect on how you might apply this in your own teaching
  • Develop skills to facilitate challenging classroom discussions
  • Develop awareness of effective evaluation processes.

Course learning objectives

Upon successful completion of this microcredential, you should be able to:

  • Identify relevant, discipline-specific Indigenous materials and resources
  • Design creative assessment tasks to assess your students' understanding of Indigenous content
  • Build your skills in facilitating classroom discussions of Indigenous topics, and develop strategies to manage difficult or challenging classroom conversations.

Assessment

Assessment task 1: Video Presentation – Weight: 50%

  • Using a subject that you are currently teaching (or if not currently teaching, a subject that you have previously taught or been involved with), identify how you could embed Indigenous knowledge and perspectives into the subject through content, readings / resources, class activities and assessment.

Assessment task 2: Reflection on Difficult Discussions Scenario – Weight: 50%

  • Choosing one of the scenarios provided, or drawing upon your own experience, write a critical reflection on how you could improve on the design and delivery of a classroom activity that involves difficult/challenging discussion of Indigenous curriculum content.

Learners must pass all assessment tasks in this microcredential to pass the microcredential overall.

To complete this online microcredential, you will need access to a computer or device with adequate internet access and sufficient software and bandwidth to support web conferencing. You will also require an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas and Zoom.
