The School of Communication in the UTS Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences takes a hands-on approach to communication education with a focus on active collaboration with industry partners and world-class research that activates positive social change. The Strategic Communication Discipline is part of the School and offers a suite of undergraduate, postgraduate and short courses based on the latest research and created by a combination of senior academic researchers and leading industry professionals. The Discipline has strong links to industry including the Public Relations Institute of Australia and the World Health Organisation with the School designated as a  WHO Collaborating Centre for Evaluation of Communication.

Effective stakeholder relationships can make or break your organisation. During this course you’ll learn to identify and assess prospective stakeholders and build creative and productive connections that help advance your business goals.

 

About this course

Learn to engage, involve and consult your organisation’s stakeholders with this short course. Through a combination of live workshops, self-led learning and the use of research and contemporary case studies, you’ll:

  • Explore concepts of stakeholders and engagement
  • Consider the how and why of building effective stakeholder relationships
  • Learn tools and tactics to support effective relationship building
  • Understand the impact of those relationships on your business outcomes
  • Create stakeholder maps to inform your engagement plans
  • Develop a stakeholder engagement plan for your workplace.

 

This course was a great way to expand on my understanding of stakeholder engagement. I found it especially useful to hear the different perspectives of and experiences with stakeholder engagement from my cohort who came from a range of professional backgrounds.

Course outline

The course comprises three modules and is delivered over four weeks, part-facilitated and part self-paced:

Module 1 - Stakeholders

  • Who or what is a stakeholder?
  • Creating stakeholder maps.

Module 2 - Engagement

  • What is authentic engagement?
  • Building relationships by engaging with stakeholders.

Module 3 - Stakeholder engagement plan

  • Practical tools and tips for engaging with stakeholders
  • Creating a stakeholder engagement plan.

Over the course, you will be immersed in UTS’s innovative learning experience, with:

  • A live, online 1.5-hour orientation session to get to know your facilitator, your peers and the course
  • Live, online interactive workshops (1-hour and 1.5-hours) throughout the course to discuss learnings from the modules
  • Ongoing, expert academic support with collaborative online activities
  • A live, online 3-hour session at the end of the course to review your stakeholder engagement plan.

In addition to the live sessions, participants will need to undertake approximately 22 hours of self-directed online learning during the 4 week course.

Course learning objectives

At the successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  • Identify and categorise stakeholders to develop a stakeholder map
  • Advise organisations on how best to engage with stakeholders through a stakeholder engagement plan
  • Apply a number of stakeholder engagement tactics to your own work context.

  • To complete this online short course, you will need access to a computer or device with adequate internet access and sufficient software and bandwidth to support web conferencing. You will also require an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas and Zoom.
