This microcredential will help you develop your understanding of the latest tools and techniques in financial management, preparing you for responsible and sustainable leadership using the financial management perspective.

You will explore a framework around financial analysis and modelling, as well as business, risk and investment evaluation, focusing on four main areas:

  • Assessment of an organisation's financial health
  • Planning of the organisation's future financial performance
  • Financing of the organisation's operations
  • Evaluation of business and investment opportunities for the organisation.

Course outline

The following topics will be covered during the microcredential:

  • Financial analysis and performance
  • Forecasting and growth management
  • Financing operations
  • Investment and risk analysis.

Course delivery

This course is delivered online using a range of resources, self-directed study and live interactive sessions with the academic. Course content will be presented to participants online in a variety of formats, including lecture slides, notes, videos and articles.

At the beginning of the unit, participants are expected to review materials and complete tasks on their own before attending online review sessions with the lecturer (sessions are spread over the learning period). Materials will be provided on the learning management system, but participants are also expected to seek information independently. Feedback will be given following formative assessment and during the online sessions.

Course learning objectives

On successful completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Describe the role of financial management in evaluating the financial health and performance of an organisation
  • Apply financial management techniques to financial analysis and financial modelling problems
  • Assess financial decisions relating to investment, financing and risk management.

Assessment

Assessment task 1

Online quiz (individual) - weighting: 45%

  • Ability to identify and appraise financial management techniques
  • Accuracy of the financial analysis and modelling
  • Soundness and accuracy of investment and risk management decisions made.

Assessment task 2

Scenario and case analysis (individual) - weighting: 55%

  • The suitability of the methodology used
  • The accuracy of the numerical, graphical, and verbal analysis
  • The critical interpretation of the results of this analysis
  • The structure of the report and clarity of presentation.

In order to pass the microcredential, participants must achieve at least 50% of the course’s total marks and complete both assessments.

  • To complete this online course, you will need a personal computer with adequate internet access and sufficient software and bandwidth to support web conferencing. You will also require an operating system with a web browser compatible with Canvas.
