Telecoms Technology Overview

You probably answer your phone, text, send an email or backup a file to the cloud with very little thought involved. But can you explain what's actually going on at the backend during these seemingly simple daily tasks? If you use this technology regularly and are looking for ways to improve your personal and professional productivity, then understanding how it operates and the services it enables could help you manage your current services and identify new opportunities.

About this course

This course starts with definitions of packet switched networks, broadband access, email and worldwide web operation – the fundamentals of telecoms technology. Next, you’ll look at ethernet-based local area networks and internet architectures, including an exploration of router functionality and how TCP/IP protocols underpin the internet.

No telecoms course would be complete without a review of broadband services, including the national broadband network (NBN), so you’ll spend some time exploring the NBN business model and services. Before the course ends, you’ll also get a taste of mobile network technologies – an overview of 4G mobile voice and data networks and an introduction to 5G.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to explain the following key concepts to a peer:

  • How packet switching underpins the internet
  • Fixed and wireless networks and implications of network "virtualisation"
  • Traditional ADSL 2+ broadband, NBN Fibre to the Node/Curb (FTTN/FTTC), HFC and Fibre to the Premises (FTTP)
  • The NBN business model
  • Capabilities of 4G LTE and 5G networks.

Dr Tony Eyers
Lecturer Telecoms Engineering

Known for being a passionate presenter, Dr Tony Eyers uses his extensive expertise to simplify high-level technological content for audiences at all levels.

Tony has worked in telecoms and IT roles for more than 30 years, including 12 years as a lecturer in Telecoms Engineering at the University of Wollongong. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering (Yale University), a Graduate Diploma in Education (University of Wollongong), and undertook his PhD (University of Wollongong) under a Telstra Research Labs contract.
