Public engagement for managers (online)

Public sector organisations at all levels are required to lead public engagement processes for their communities and stakeholders. In recent years, the practice has become more specialised and sophisticated. This public engagement course online is the opportunity for managers and executives to explore the aspects of public engagement that are critical to them in their roles.

About this course

This public engagement online course provides the opportunity to managers and executives to come together and to critically explore the aspects of public engagement that are relevant to them in their roles as leaders and to their wider organisation. It will utilise best practice research and evidence as well as the existing knowledge and experiences of participants themselves to ensure that the course is relevant and applicable. This online course will culminate in a facilitated online workshop which focuses on the topics that participants are most eager to discuss with their peers.

Course structure

This public engagement course online will cover the following content:

Session one – Prework
(Canvas Learning Management System [LMS] | 30 minutes)

You will be invited to complete some preparatory work online in your own time. This includes introducing yourself to the group, a short survey and some pre-reading. This session will be conducted within the UTS LMS Canvas, and you will have a week to complete this prework prior to session two.

 

Session two – Critical aspects of public engagement
(Live, online zoom video | 1.5 hours)

Facilitated by our presenter as a live, online zoom video this session will focus on the critical aspects of public engagement processes, including:

  • Best practice principles in public engagement.
  • Key steps in the planning process.
  • Determining influence with community, stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • How to tackle common challenges such as community apathy or difficult stakeholders.

 

Session three – Embedding engagement
(Live, online zoom video | 1.5 hours)

Once again facilitated by our presenter as a live, online zoom video, this session will focus on how engagement can be embedded in your organisation to improve practice, both with your communities and within your organisation itself. It will include:

  • Recognising engagement practice throughout your organisation.
  • Building an organisational culture that supports engagement.
  • Processes, policies and procedures to support practice.
  • Building staff capacity and capabilities.

 

Session four - Online engagement workshop
(Live, online zoom video | 1.5 hours)

This final live zoom link will provide you with the opportunity to explore challenges and opportunities related to public engagement in your role that you have identified throughout the course. There will be the opportunity for questions, discussion and networking during the live zoom session. If you have time and wish to extend yourself, relevant additional readings will be recommended.

 

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course you should be able to:

  • Understand the critical aspects of a public engagement processes
  • Discuss the challenges and opportunities in public engagement
  • Critically reflect on how best to support your organisation to deliver high quality public engagement

 

Delivery style

This public engagement course online will be facilitated through an interactive live video link. Registered participants will be able to connect to the video link using Zoom (available free) and a reliable internet connection is required. Video connection details will be made available to each participant prior to the course via Canvas, the UTS LMS. Course materials, surveys and/or readings will also be made available to participants within Canvas LMS.

This public engagement course has no prerequisites and is open to all members of the public.
