Evaluation Online: getting started (online)

Evaluation is a valuable tool for strengthening the quality of programs and improving outcomes, and provides an opportunity for critical and strategic thinking. Through collecting and analysing information about your program's activities, characteristics and outcomes you will better understand its effectiveness and improve future program services. This evaluation course online will introduce you to the basics you need to get started with evaluating your program or initiative.

About this course

In this evaluation course you will apply evaluative practice and thinking and learn how to analyse the assumptions and values underpinning the program outcomes. This course will consist of five online modules that will be facilitated by our presenters through an interactive live video link, with each module 60 minutes in duration (5 hours in total). As the introductory course in our evaluations online series, participants are encouraged to enrol however, it is not a prerequisite for future courses in the series which include:

Course structure

This evaluation course online provides participants with applied knowledge and skills to evaluate programs and projects within their work. This online course will be led by two academic practitioners who have extensive experience conducting evaluations and also supporting the capacity of others to undertake evaluations. You will interact via zoom with the presenters and other course participants.

The modules that make up this evaluation online course will cover the following topics:

  • The big picture and how to put it together
  • Clarifying your intended outcomes
  • From outcomes to indicators
  • Developing a logic model
  • Developing key evaluation questions

 

Learning outcomes

At the completion of this evaluation course online you will:

  • Understand broad approaches and frameworks for evaluation.
  • Understand the major elements that go into an evaluation plan.
  • Understand the different types of evaluation.
  • Be able to articulate clear program outcomes.
  • Be able to develop an overall theory of change.
  • Understand different approaches to presenting program logics.

 

Delivery style

This evaluation course online will be facilitated through an interactive live video link. Registered participants will be able to connect to the video link using Zoom (available free) and a reliable internet connection is required. Video connection details will be made available to each participant prior to the course via Canvas, the UTS Learning Management System (LMS). Course materials, presentations and/or readings will also be made available to participants within Canvas LMS.

Each module from within this online course will follow a common learning path that will involve:

  • Some minor preparatory work to get participants thinking about the topic prior to the module.
  • Clarifying specific learning objectives for the module.
  • Introduction of key concepts, frameworks, terminology.
  • ‘Deconstruction’ of a worked example.
  • Extension of key concepts to discuss challenges and risks and other applications.
  • Online interactive discussion to help participants apply knowledge to their own evaluation context.
  • Short summary of main principles/skills/concepts.
  • Direction to other useful resources and tools.

 

Course prerequisites

This online evaluation course has no prerequisites and is open to all members of the public. This online course is the first in the evaluation online course series. Participants are not required to complete all the courses within the series although it is the suggested learning pathway.
